Choosing site:

Security and Privacy

Is the site secure?
Are the servers stable?
Do they protect against colluding?
What card-shuffling algorithm and RNG (random number generator) do they use?
These are just some of the questions you should consider.
The sites we recommend are all satisfatory in terms of Security and Privacy. Generally most sites are but since many new sites start up every month there will be some that just aren’t secure enough.

Action

Some sites are small and it can be difficult to get in to your favorite game when it best suits you.
Look out for the average number of players on the site.

Tournaments / Cash games

Depending on your preferred game type some sites are better suited for you than others.
Some sites specialize in tournaments other have focus on cash games.

Promotions

What kind of player incentives does each online poker room offer? Do they reward frequent visitors?
If you play often (perhaps 5000 hands a month or more) then this should be very important to you. Choosing a site with good promotions that suit your playing style can actually get you $100-$2000 extra each month on some sites.

Choosing game:

Game type

You should mainly be playing the game you are best at.
Choosing between Limit Hold’em/No Limit Hold’em or Cash games/Tournaments is important and difficult.
The games are actually VERY different and requires different approaches to be played succesfully.
Start by playing the game you believe to be your best. Keep accurate records of each game session and analyze your results for every 5-10 game sessions. If the results are unsatisfactory then try to figure out if you are playing wrong or if it might be better for you to play a different game.

Game limits

Moving up in game size is the surest and fastest way to loose your bankroll. You should always be playing at at level where you are comfortable. If you feel terrible loosing $50 on a hand because that feels like a lot of money to you or if you are constantly worried aboput loosing the money you brought to the table, then you are probably playing a too high a level.
If the money you are playing for I a given hand (etc. $2) means nothing at all to you, then you are probably playing at too low a limit.

Opponents

NEVER believe that you can beat any game. Try to study a game for 10 minutes before sitting down and/or play ultra tight for the first 10-15 minutes until you have a feel for your opponents.
If you after a while figure out are sitting at a table with all good players then LEAVE. It is a lot easier to find a table with a few badplayers and win some money from them, than it is to just break even at the table with all the good players.
